do not call list

September 30, 2008 by Wendy S

It’s about time that Canada did something to help us get the annoying telemarketers to stop calling.

So fellow Canadians, you can regisiter here, to lessen the number of annoying phone calls you get.

However, it’s 8:30am…8 1/2 hours after you could start registering, and the site is already down.  You’d think they would have planned better for this.  Whatever.

I did say “lessen”…there are some exemptions (of course *rolls eyes*):

There are certain kinds of telemarketing calls and faxes that are exempt from the National DNCL, including those made by or on behalf of:

  • registered charities seeking donations
  • newspapers looking for subscriptions
  • political parties and their candidates, and
  • companies with whom you have an existing commercial relationship; for example, if you have done business with a company in the previous 18 months––such as a carpet-cleaning company––that company can call you.

Telemarketers making exempt calls must maintain their own do not call lists. If you do not want to be called by these telemarketers, you can ask to be put on their do not call lists. They are obliged to do so within 31 days.

I think that getting rid of any annoying callers would be great!  Just remember to tell those that are expemt to “take you off their list” and they’ll have to…it’s the law!
