bedtime stories

February 15, 2009 by Wendy S

At bedtime, BigDaddy and I cuddle up on Munchkin’s big double bed with both the girls and we read two stories.  A “long” book (one with lots of words) and a “short” book (one with fewer words).   Peanut usually picks out the short book and it is usually Sandra Boynton’s Snuggle Puppy.

Last night was different.  Munchkin picked out two stories — I Can Read’s Biscuit and Eric Carle’s Brown Bear.

And with very little help, she read both books to me!

Sounding out words, remembering words from the pages before!  It was aweomse!  I’m so proud.  And she was so proud… “Mommy, I did it! I read the whole thing!”

I had gotten the “I Can Read 50th Anniversary Boxset” for Munchkin for Christmas.  The nostalgic in me was very excited to read ‘Frog and Toad’ and ‘Amelia Bedelia’ again.  But the starter book in the series was “Biscuit”.  I think I had read it once before but that was over a month a go, just after Christmas.

She’s growing up too quickly.  Peanut too.

Peanut is memorizing stories now and recognizes pages in books.  She really likes “I Know A Rhino” which is a book Munchkin got from a good friend of ours.  She’ll fill in the words when I stop; it’s cute.

I think from now on, I’ll try to get Munchkin to read one story to me each night at bedtime. I have to go over there and get some more “I Can Read” books.

Oh, and if you haven’t clicked on any of those links that I posted.  They all link to amazon.ca. I love Amazon.  Good selection, good prices, good and fast shipping.

Do you have any favorite learn-to-read books you think we should get?
