getting back to normal?

July 30, 2009 by Wendy S

Life has been turned upside down over here…but tomorrow life could get back to normal.

I could be back at work tomorrow. For the last 38 days, I’ve been on strike.

My local, 79, voted yesterday and we ratified our new contract. The Local 416s are voting today and could be back to work as early as 12:01am Friday morning …tomorrow!!!

Still waiting to hear about us…but I would assume (probably not a good idea) that we’ll go back tomorrow too. Please cross your fingers and pray really hard.

The sticking point had to do with the garbage clean up… the City wanted to contract it all out and the Union wanted overtime. They compromised and said that the Union could do the clean up Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but if it’s not finished on Sunday then the City can contract in a private company.

This has been really stressful becuase the $200 per week that I got for picketing just isn’t enough.

And to make things more complicated, I was picketing 2 over-night shifts per week instead of the 5 4-hour day shifts I could have done. Driving into the city 2 nights a week was much more gas-efficient than 5.

However, we were able to get a few things done around the house: our master bathroom is very close to being finished and the shower rod got installed in the girls’ bathroom.

My in-laws are moving so we’ve been able to help them with that. We now have 1/2 a garage full of their boxes. They have a 3 week time between their old house closing and getting the new one, so everything is going in storage. And where will they stay, you ask? With us! They’re going to get Munchkin’s room and she’ll camp out with us. It will be nice to have in-home daycare for a few weeks!

I’m sure there’s more to tell you about, but I’ll save that for upcomming posts.

Sorry that I didn’t blog for the last little while, it’s just that I didn’t feel so positive and up-beat like I normally am. It would have led to some dreary, boring posts. But I’m back…things are definately looking up!
