flu frenzy!

November 27, 2009 by Wendy S

I probably don’t have to tell you that there is this little flu bug going around.  His name is Hini.  He’s not very nice.

You can just ask my friend @MyThreeSons — they have both been affected by the Wrath of Hini.  MyThreeSons blogged about her 2 sons got “the Pig Flu“.

One night I had a discussion with the girls about Hini.  I asked Munchkin if some of the kids in her class had been away from school becuase they were sick? Of course the answer was “yes”.

I asked her if it was a good idea for us to find away to help us from getting really sick. Of course the answer was “yes”. Even Peanut thought this was a good idea.

So we headed home, got on short sleeved t-shirts and headed to the H1N1 clinic to get our H1N1 Flu Vaccines.

We didn’t have to wait too long.  I went first to show the girls how easy it was.  The nurse gave me a bandaid and then put a heart sticker on it.  Peanut thought this was great!  She hopped up on my lap and pulled her sleeve up.  She whimpered for a second but was easily distracted by having to pick out her sticker.

Then it was Munchkin’s turn.  I had to hold her down with all my might.  My leg wrapped around hers so she couldn’t run and then I held her arms down while the nurse stuck her with the needle.  She was screaming and crying through the whole thing.  She picked out her sticker and then we were off to the waiting room.

15 mintues later after a bottle of juice and a bit of Kung Fu Panda and were were on our way home.  When ever I asked if she was okay, Munchkin would answer “I didn’t want to get a needle”.

Mom Central has asked me to share this story with you. Awareness about H1N1 is very important. Not all parents will choose vaccination but you need to know what H1N1 is and all of the different choices you have to prevent you and your children from getting it.

If you do choose to get the vaccine, this site will tell you where you can go:
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ccom/flu/h1n1/public/clinics.aspx

If you or your child should become sick (which is still possible even if you have gotten the vaccine), the Ministry of Health has an influenza assessment tool that can help Moms determine if their child needs medical care.

It can be found here: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ccom/flu/h1n1/public/tools/assessment/default.aspx

And lots more info can be found here: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ccom/flu/
