tim horton’s saved me from a traffic nightmare

March 26, 2010 by Wendy S

All Canadians know how wonderful Tim Horton’s is!   And today, I love it even more (if that is at all possible).

I left the house a few minutes later than normal, and hummed and hawed about whether or not to get coffee.  See if I wanted to get coffee, I’d need to stop at the bank. Hum. Ha. Hum. Ha.

So off to the bank I went.

After getting coffee, I hopped on the highway to go to work.  Not too bad, just 10 minutes behind schedule.  Traffic wasn’t too bad on the eastbound QEW though Oakville.  Drove past the Ford plant, listening to 680 News.

Great. 2 lanes were blocked with a collision past Winston Churchill.  Round the corner and stopped.  No worries, I’ll just inch my way along and I’ll be late.

I’m in the left-most lane; getting closer to Winston Churchill.  Radio says “all lanes are blocked”.

I start working my way over to the right.  One lane. Please nice expensive car, please let me in. Two lanes.  Oh good, SUV driver left a big gap.  Finally in the lane to the exit ramp.

I hear sirens. I see the flashing lights of 2 police cars flying up the left-most shoulder, closely followed by a big truck with an lighted arrow on the back.  Radio says “all lanes closed”.

Wow.  I was so relieved.  Not only was I smart enough to get over to get out of this mess, but I stopped to get coffee.  If I didn’t have to go to bank so that I could fuel my coffee addiction, I would have been past the Winston Churchill exit and have been stuck with the 1000s of other cars with nowhere to go.

What had happened was:

Ontario Provincial Police said the accident occurred around 6:50 a.m. when a Honda Accord slammed into a tractor-trailer that had stalled between the exit lane and the shoulder at Erin Mills Parkway.

An air ambulance landed on the highway just before 7:30 a.m. to transport the 39-year-old victim to hospital, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
(From the Toronto Star)

It is incidents like this that remind me how carefully I need to drive and how aware I need to be on my commute to and from work.

Please.  Everyone drive carefully.
