open discussion: split grades [updated]

September 3, 2010 by Wendy S

I’m going to try something new.

While class lists are being finalized for our school, the new staff lists was posted first.  Last year there was only one grade 1 class and only one grade 1 teacher (kinda makes sense).  But this year there are more grade 1 kids and some staff have been shuffled.

Last year’s grade 1 teacher is moving to JK/SK.  And there are new teachers teaching the grade 1 and grade 1/2 combined class.

Hmmm.  Combined class.

This got me thinking.  Could this be good for Munchkin?  She’s already reading at a grade 2 level and is pretty good with the other stuff.  By no means am I wanting to have her skip a grade or anything like that, but I’m just curious if there is any advantage to her being with the older kids.

When I was in Grade 2 it was a combined class with Grade 1.  There were only 6 grade 1 kids and I really don’t remember much else about it.  Obviously I wasn’t harmed by it, but today, things are different.

Confirmed!

It has been confirmed that she will be in a split grade 1-2 class.

So here is where you come in. What are your experiences with combined grades?  Are there advantages? Disadvantages?  Would you want your kid in a combined class?
