smarty pants

April 18, 2011 by Wendy S

Since Peanut turned 4, she is blowing us away with some of the things that she’s doing, thinking and saying.  It’s like she flicked a switch and went from toddler to preschooler over night!

A few days before her party, I trimmed her bangs because they were in her eyes.

She says, “No, Mommy! Cut them all off!”
Me: Um…no. Why would you want me to do that?”
Peanut: Becuase I don’t want any bangs; like Munchkin. I’m a big girl.
Me: {laughing} Then we need to let your bangs grow out. We can’t just cut them off!

Both Munchkin and I don’t have any bangs; our hair is long enough to tuck behind our ears.

Peanut is different from her sister. Really, that’s not a shock; you expect them to be different.  But watching the girls develop has been fun.  And I constantly remind myself to stop comparing them.  That is hard to do because the only parenting experience I have had up to this point has been with Munchkin.  Not must else to base my knowledge on.Knowledge of letters and reading has been the biggest difference.  I’ve written before about Munchkin’s reading abilities and they are above her grade level.  Knowing that Peanut is a different kid, we haven’t been putting any pressure on her to be like Munchkin.  However, she starts school in a few months and should probably know her letters and what they sound like.

Over the last few months, we’ve been encouraging her and helping her learn her letters. Recently, she’ll stand at the fridge with our Leap Frog Fridge Phonics magnets and announce “I’m going to learn my letters now”.  It’s very cute!  We also got her the LeapFrog Letter Factory DVD.  Both are helping. She now recognises all her letters and knows what most of them sound like.

This is big “growth spurt” for her.

We have not had to work on numbers. She seemed to pick that up very quickly.  Maybe she will teach me some things when it comes to math!

Though, one day, I asked her to put the letters in order.  And she sorted them by colour.  Smarty pants.
