Ooh, what a lovely contest!
I’d love to nominate my sister, the timing is great for this contest.
Why she deserves it? Aside from just being a lovely person, she has been such a help to me with the arrival of my second daughter at the end of August. We were planning a home birth and needed someone to help with our four year old during labour, of course I had one of those labours where my water broke early Monday morning and baby didn’t arrive til Tuesday afternoon! My sister drove an hour and a half to our place with her 16 month old to help out, she kept my daughter happy and entertained all day Monday. Then she stayed overnight, which hadn’t been planned since I thought labour was really starting them… and it finally did Tuesday morning. By then my daughter was getting a bit stressed about when the baby was coming, I was in full labour and no use and she managed to handle that and her little one too. They finally went out to metro to get some groceries and dinner after trying to coax my daughter out of the house all day. Well, wouldn’t you know that is when I wanted to start pushing and my daughter wanted to be there for the baby’s arrival. My husband is calling my sister on her cell phone, who is at the check-out at Metro! She tries to tell the cashier they need to HURRY, a baby is coming, but the urgency seemed to be missed by the cashier! So they finally get out of metro, hurry home, she lets my daughter out of the car and orders her to RUN to us – and she made it, baby was JUST crowning when my daughter got back! So she wins for being the fabulous auntie who got her niece back in time to see her sister born.
So, that would likely be enough dealing with that marathon, but then my baby was hospitalized from day 5 for 18 days! Not exactly what we had counted on! During that time my mum wound up taking my daughter to visit my sister while looking after my niece. My sister and her husband were great at helping normalize everything for my daughter, despite her baby sister being in the hospital. My sister is also a nurse, so she spent countless hours writing to me or talking on the phone to help me through all the crazy things they were testing for in my newborn! She came down to visit and cheer me up in the hospital. Then since my daughter being discharged she has answered the crazy questions, help calm the paranoia of the mom who has dealt with a hospitalized child and spent time researching any other possible explanations for the health issues for me.
As a nurse and mom she has spent so much time on the phone with friends and friends-of-friends with questions and worries about their little ones. Most recently she’s been helping our good friend who’s baby wasn’t gaining weight to sort through the tonnes of things she was told to do, to help her get through and get the baby gaining (baby is doing well now!) She has spent tonnes of time helping out a local postpartum depression support group for area women. I love that she is always there for us, or anyone of her friends, who need an ear to listen or some advice from someone they trust in the medical field. She’s back at school now to finish her nurse practitioner’s program, while being a fabulous mom to her now 17 month old and still being involved in so many other things!
So, that’s why I nominate my little sister!
(and if you happen to choose her, she has celiac and it looks like you do have some treats that would be gluten free so she could eat it… if I could ask for that….)
