Education Fun: Fractions in Between #education #fun

June 1, 2017 by Wendy S

Education fun-Fractions in between @ mapsgirl.caWith summer just around the corner, finding fun ways to keep the girls’ minds active is very important.  Keep it fun is even more important…especially when working on fractions!

Figuring out fractions can be a challenge! This competitive game will help your child evaluate the differences between fractions, from largest to smallest. Your child will become more comfortable converting, comparing, and using fractions after just a few rounds. Using a calculator can be a big help, especially if the values of the fractions are complex. This game is great for a rainy day and when your child needs a different setting to practice fractions. It’s quick and easy to set up, so let’s dive in!

What You Need:

  • Deck of cards with the face cards (jacks, queens, and kings) removed
  • Construction paper (any color)
  • Black marker
  • Pencil
  • Scratch paper
  • Calculator

What You Do:

  • Have one of the players create a game board by turning a piece of construction paper horizontal, or landscape. Trace two rows of three cards, with space in between. In between both rows, draw a greater than symbol (>).

  • Ask one of the players to shuffle the cards and deal 6 of them face up in the spaces on the board. Place them down in the order they are dealt from top to bottom and left to right.
  • Explain that the numbers on the top are the numerators, and the numbers on the bottom are denominators. Each player should determine if the statement that their cards make is true (based on the x > y > z game board). The fractions should decrease in value when moving left to right.
  • If they need to, players can use the calculator and divide the numerator by the denominator to find the decimal value of the fraction. The calculator will be especially helpful with complex fractions.
  • If the statement is correct, the player gets a point. Play moves to the next player.
  • Continue to play until the deck is finished.
  • The player with the most points wins!

Let me know what your family thinks of this fun game!!

peanut butter to chocolate ratio: a finite balance

January 22, 2013 by Wendy S

Saying that I love Reese’s peanut butter cups is an understatement.(And these are one of my biggest temptations)

Their combination of peanut butter and chocolate is amazing! And trust me, I have tried many other peanut butter and chocolate combos that try to be like Reese’s but they never measure up. Never.

However, even within the fine Reese’s family, there is a finite line where the peanut butter and chocolate scales are tipped, one way or the other.

From hersheys.com

The original Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are perfect in every way. Okay, they were better a few years ago when they were bigger, but as far as the peanut butter to chocolate ratio, they are perfect.

From hersheys.com

The Reese’s Miniatures come in a close second. However, having to unwrap each one before eating it is a pain.

From hersheys.com

Reese’s minis might have solved the “too much wrapper” issue, but the ratio of peanut butter to chocolate is off. I think there is too much chocolate. Not much they can do about that because less chocolate would make them harder to ship in the package that they come in.

From hersheys.com

If you go the other way, Reese’s Big Cup is waaaaay too much peanut butter!

From candyblog.net

Since I have never tried them (probably because I have never seen them), the 1lb Peanut Butter cups have to be insanely big. 2 cups at a 1/2 pound each? Crazy.  Here’s more info at candyblog.net.

Last, but definitely not least, are Reese’s Pieces. I think they are perfect in every way…crunchy candy outside with just the right amount of chocoate and, the pièce de résistance, the yummy peanut butter in middle.

From hersheys.com

Now they did go and make other peanut butter cups with other kinds of chocolate.  I’m sure some people might like these, but why mess with perfection??

What is your favourite Reese’s peanut butter to chocolate ratio??
Do you think I put too much thought into this??
Do you have a favourite candy??

I just wrote it because I like them. If they did pay me to eat them, I’d be in heaven!
It’s funny that I feel I have to put a disclaimer on this.

You HAVE to read this press release from Tim Hortons (and find out my surprise)!!!

“In an effort to spread the holiday cheer, Tim Hortons will surprise thousands of random guests across Canada with free orders between Tuesday and Saturday.

The campaign, called the “Random Cups of Kindness” will see thousands of guests at more than 3,000 restaurants receiving their order for free.”

At Tim Hortons we have the honour of serving millions of guests each and every day,” says David Clanachan, COO, Tim Hortons.

“With the hustle and bustle of the season upon us, we thought this would be the perfect time to show our appreciation and randomly surprise many of our loyal guests with a free order.”

These guests will be handed a red bracelet as a memento, and will be encouraged to share their experiences on Twitter using the hashtag #randomcupsofkindness.

They’ll also have the ability to post any images or stories on Tim Hortons’ Facebook page.

“Our guests regularly connect with us in a variety of different environments, whether online at home, in restaurants or on-the-go with smart phones,” says Clanachan.

“They place orders, share experiences and give us great feedback. We want to thank them all and share Random Cups of Kindness with as many as we can.”

Tim Hortons also said that 100 Canadians who mention @TimHortons in their Tweets will be randomly selected and surprised with a Tim Hortons gift card.”

So when Tim Hortons say that “It’s on us!”  that “us” includes Craig and me!!

We get to be little Secret Santas and give out “Random Cups of Kindness” to people in our community!!

Leafs vs Flyers with @FordCanada

March 30, 2012 by Wendy S

Last night Craig and I got to enjoy the Leafs game at the ACC with Ford Canada and a few other social media influencers.

We were spoiled with great food, a few drinks and a lot of laughs!

The Leafs didn’t win but I really enjoyed the experience. I’ve never sat so close to the ice! We were right behind the Leaf’s penalty box! Amazing!

Thank you so much to the amazing Ford Canada people, Rhonda and Jayne, for a great night!

Here are some photos from the night:
