BloggersUnite for Haiti: Oakville Helps

January 31, 2010 by Wendy S

BloggersUnite for Haiti‘s objective is to share information about this disaster and how people around the world can provide aid to ongoing relief efforts.

Every day on the news you hear about all of the Provincial and National efforts and fundraising events going on.  I want to focus on some local efforts.

Oakville Haiti Relief Fundraiser

You are invited to a Haiti Relief Fundraiser to honour Oakville residents Dr. John and Sandy Yates who are currently in Haiti doing humanitarian work. All proceeds go towards International Child Care Canada Inc and is matched 100% by the Canadian government.

Please come out to the Firehall to listen to a rockin’ band, Still Garage, eat some great food and get together as a community to show John and Sandy how very proud we are of them.

Tickets are only $15
Contact Krista at krista.downey@hotmail.com for more information or to purchase tickets.
Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

Town of Oakville

The Town of Oakville is sending condolences to the people of Haiti who were struck by a devastating earthquake on Tuesday and is encouraging Oakville residents to provide support to relief effort organizations.

“On behalf of Town Council, I extend deepest condolences and sympathies to all Oakville residents who have family and friends in the areas devastated by this week’s earthquake in Haiti. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this terrible natural disaster,” said Mayor Rob Burton.

Oakville residents wishing to contribute to relief efforts can donate money to established relief organizations that can respond immediately to the crisis. Well-known Canadian organizations already involved and working in Haiti include:

  • Canadian Red Cross
  • World Vision
  • Unicef
  • Plan Canada
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • Humanitarian Coalition (made up of Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Quebec, CARE Canada and Save the Children Canada)

Information on how to donate money can be found on their websites. More detailed information about the relief effort can be found on the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website.

Early reports indicate extensive infrastructure damage and concern about large numbers of killed and injured persons. The Red Cross reported that more than three million people could be affected by the quake and that the damage is catastrophic. The 7.0 earthquake occurred as Haiti was still struggling to recover from devastating hurricanes in 2008.

Containers of Hope for Haiti

Now, and over the next several months, residents of Oakville will be able to contribute much-needed supplies to Haitian earthquake victims in a direct, trusted and reliable way.

Please help however you can.  If you know of other events or groups who are helping Haiti, please leave me a note in the comments and I will be sure to add them here.
