they moved the manse??

October 11, 2012 by Wendy S

In May, our minister at Walton, Rev. Gill, made it a point during Sunday morning announcements to assure the congregation that he still lives in the same location.

The manse that he lives in is not the original manse.  Due to the original one’s location, they sold it as they were able to make money on the sale, buy a new manse and still have money left over.

But when the City wanted to keep the old manse (it’s an historical building now), they moved the building and then sold the land for a new development.  However, the newspaper article about the move made it sound like Rev. Gill moved too.

“Walton’s manse moves on”  (no reference to “old”)
When the girls heard that they had moved a building, they wanted to see!

big kids and little kids are a lot of fun! [w/ video]

July 16, 2012 by Wendy S

What a weekend!!  We had a tonne of fun with the “big kids” from our church and ended the weekend relaxing with our “little kids” (and there’s a video below of one of our kids).

Craig and I spent the weekend with 9 “big kids” from our church’s Senior Youth Group (grades 9-12).  It was a lot of fun!  We headed to Emerald Lake campground on Friday night. After checking in, the kids got to work setting up their tents and getting organized.  We had a late dinner followed by relaxing around the campfire.Saturday was spent at the lake.  They had huge, blow up water toys!  There were trampolines, log rolling, teeter-totter and rock-climing-type thingy (not sure what it was called).  The kids spent a lot of time trying to run from the big trampoline to the smaller one across the “moonwalk” to get to the smaller trampoline on the other side.  A few kids were successful…but we all had fun trying to get across.

wendy jumpingWe also jumped off the cliff.  That was a LOT of fun!!

Dinner was late that day with an even later campfire.  A few kids stayed up chit chatting around the fire until the wee hours of the morning.

After a few hours sleep, we got up and started packing. The sprinkles of rain kept us moving because no one wanted to be stuck outside if it decided to rain harder.  After a quick stop at Timmy’s we were on our way home.

Craig had taken some of the kids back to Oakville but I head to Niagara Falls to get our “little kids” who were very happy to see me when I got there.  Once were were home, unpacked and took the trailer back to the storage stop (we can’t keep in our drive way for the summer anymore because some crazy person in our neighbourhood called by-law and they tried to slap us with some ridiculous fine.Fortunately, our friends down the street were having their Sunday night gathering so we didn’t have to cook!  The kids played in the pool and we were able to relax!

I did hop in the pool for a bit and helped Rachel learned to dive! We started on one knee and after 3 times doing that, she tried from her feet!  Way to go Rachel!!!

It was a great weekend!!

How was your weekend??

love your neighbour: a lesson in giving

October 24, 2011 by Wendy S

For the month of October, our church is focusing on Stewardship, both in our church and in our community.

For the children in our congregation, we want them to understand what stewardship is all about: they have been given gifts from God in the form of time, talent and treasures.

Also, they are learning that with each of these gifts they need to

    • thank God for what they have been given,
    • use each gift wisely
    • and to share the gifts with others.

The first two weeks we talked about time and talent.  This week we talked about our treasures.

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”~ Matthew 22:36-40 ~

The kids were each given a $5 bill.  They were so excited!  With that money, they were asked to thank God for their treasure, use it wisely and to share it with others.

The lightbulb went off in my head.  Our plan for Sunday afternoon was to go to Indulge Ice Cream in Cambridge for their Waffle Stacks Grand Opening.  They were offering a special — Buy one waffle stack and get one waffle stack free…if…you brought in a food donation for the Cambridge Shelter.

After church we headed to the grocery store where we picked out some items that the shelter needed — cereal, coffee and sugar.

The girls used their treasures to pay for some of the food.  BigDaddy and I bought the coffee and sugar.  I’m always happy to give people coffee!!

They were very proud to bring a big box of food to help the people at the shelter.

And if you’ve never been to Indulge Ice Cream, you have to!  It’s in a train caboose!!

Win-win-win!

Win for the Cambridge Shelter!
Win for us — Waffle Stacks are awesome!
Win for an amazing day of friends, learning and giving!

Must be doing something right

December 21, 2010 by Wendy S

Munchkin has lost her first tooth!!

Photobucket

At the end of October, we had a late Thanksgiving dinner with my brother, sister-in-law (SIL) and niece.  After dinner, Munchkin was complaining about something stuck in her tooth. My SIL is a dental hygienist so took her up stairs to floss it. Munchkin came bouncing back downstairs because it was discovered that her two bottom teeth are loose.  One a bit more than the other.

We were a bit nervous because the next Friday was picture day at school and we wanted her to keep it in for just a bit longer.  She was asked not to wiggle it until then.  But really, she’s 5 and it’s exciting to have a loose tooth so I’m sure there was still some wiggling going on.

—

A few Saturdays ago, we picked up the girls from their Grandparent’s house after their sleepover. BigDaddy and I had gone out for a Christmas party the night before.  Munchkin complained that her loose tooth had been bleeding.  BigDaddy commented that it was starting to look strange in colour.

I was concerned that something was wrong. It has been a while since I lost a tooth and had no idea what was going on.  We trekked off to the dentist to find out that nothing was wrong.  The tooth was so ready to come out that the discolouration was just from dried blood inside the tooth. Munchkin had been pretty good but started to look nervous when the dentist talked about taking it out.  Seeing the worry on her face, the dentist suggested using a topical jelly to freeze the area a bit before taking it out.

We left the dentist office with some gauze in case it bled some more, a princess crown, and a tiny little tooth in  a molar-shaped plastic container on a string.  She was so proud; running to show Daddy when we got home and showing all her friends at the Christmas party attended that evening.

She put it under her pillow that night.

What did the tooth fairy leave?

Sunday morning, she comes in our room. Pauses.

“Oh, I have to see if the tooth fairy came” and runs back to her room.

“Look!! I got a toonie!!”  (for my American friends, that is a $2 coin)

We played along with her excitement, as every parent should. “What are you going to do with with it?” we asked.

She hummed and ha’d but in the end said “I dunno.”

We all got up and started getting ready for Church.  After helping the girls get dressed, I was in my room getting ready when Munchkin walked in, holding the coin up, tightly pinched between her finger and thumb.

Must be doing something right“I want to put this in the offering at church”

I paused. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I confirmed that this is what she wanted to do. I said, let’s go talk to Daddy.
She repeated her request to him. Now there are two parents in shock.

Without skipping a beat, she then says that she needs an envelope to put it in. I got the box of envelopes out with the intention to use one from a week when we didn’t go to church.  But there in the box, were 2 envelopes dated for December 5th — one for the regular giving and one labeled “White Gift“.  That one had to be hers.

I let her fill it out with the amount and her name. But she also wrote… “My tooth fairy money” Too funny.

During the service she couldn’t wait to put it in the collection plate and when the time came she smiled with pride.

I cried.

Not even 6 years old and the only money that she has ever been given where she can do what ever she wants with it and she gives it away.

Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

three for them, some for him, one for me

September 2, 2010 by Wendy S

Me: “Hey, Munchkin! Look!  I put the new calendar up.”
M: “Is it September already?”
Me: “Yep.”
M: “And there’s where I start school.” (pointing to the 7th)
Me: “How many days?”

Munchkin counts the days and I have to explain that you don’t count today and her final answer: “6!”

It was an excited “6!”

I’m excited that she’s excited.  It’s still so hard to believe that my little girl is going into Grade 1.

Back to school also means back to swimming lessons, choir practices, Home and School meetings, youth group…back to our routine.

This year I’m throwing a few new things in the mix… Sparks and another choir practice.

I signed Munchkin up for Sparks.  For those who aren’t familiar with Girl Guides, Sparks is the branch for girls who are 5 and 6 years old.  Munchkin doesn’t quiet understand why I’m so excited for her, but I hope she loves it as much as I did.

My life in Guides spans 12 years.  I started Brownies when I was 6 (they didn’t have Sparks back then) and I worked my way through Girl Guides, Pathfinders and ended as a Ranger when I was 18.  Between the events with my troops (winter camping, hiking, volunteer work, etc) and my summers at Doe Lake Girl Guide camp, I have so many fond memories and amazing experiences that helped to make me who I am today. This is my hope for Munchkin, and one day Peanut.

Waterfront In Trainting (WITs) July 1992

Now the other choir practice is for me.  Yep.  I’m joining the choir at church. Finally.  I’ve been singing since I was little. Starting in junior choir at church, then at elementary school, high school and senior choir at church.  But that was the church I grew up in.  Since then, I’ve gone to university in Peterborough, move to Toronto, moved to Brampton, moved to Oakville. BigDaddy and I never really settled in a church. Until now. We’ve been at our church for 3 years now and we really love it.  With the kids older and more dependent and our schedules are finally becoming more regular, it’s time for me to do something for myself.  So starting sometime in September (probably within the first 2 weeks), a few hours every Thursday night will be mine.  I’m really looking forward to this.

There are activities every night of the week!

After hearing so much about kids being over-scheduled, I started to worry about what I’m doing to the girls.  But I’m not doing anything.  They are going to a few activities that they enjoy.  As they grow and become more involved, I want them to make a good, well-rounded group of friends.  Long term goal is to keep them out of trouble.  If they have a good support network, there is no need to go elsewhere. Who knows what they’d find?!?  I could make a few educated guesses but lets keep this positive.

So there you have it…one crazy, full schedule of fun and friends!  And hopefully lots to blog about!
