the snow is coming!

February 1, 2011 by Wendy S

This is the forecast for today and tomorrow from Environment Canada:

Now math has never been my strong suit, but

Today – 5cm
Tonight – 15-25cm
Tomorrow – 10-15cm

Total = 30-45cms !!

I’ve already booked tomorrow off and I’m leaving early today.  With 50-70 km/h gusts and all that snow, driving would be insane.

Tonight I will stock up on hot chocolate and prepare for a day of playing in the snow tomorrow!!

rain, rain, go away!

July 24, 2010 by Wendy S

No, seriously.  GO AWAY!

Tomorrow we have over 100 people coming to our house for our annual BBQ and the weather people are calling for thunder showers in the afternoon.

rain sucks

I really would like the weather people to be wrong this time.

Today was busy with cleaning, organizing, shopping and, oh ya, dealing with my car.

Yesterday on my way to work on the the QEW, I got a flat tire.  Ends up that it’s not repairable so I now have 2 new tires.  Yay me. Oh and I have a new front sensor becuase it was telling my car that my brakes need servicing but my brakes are fine.  Cars and all their technology are great…until they stop working.  At least I know that I’m safe in my van.

BigDaddy is getting the music ready for tomorrow.  I have a few more dishes to do.  And if any of you out there know any no-rain dance or something, please do it.  Please.  Pretty please with a cherry on top.

tim horton’s saved me from a traffic nightmare

March 26, 2010 by Wendy S

All Canadians know how wonderful Tim Horton’s is!   And today, I love it even more (if that is at all possible).

I left the house a few minutes later than normal, and hummed and hawed about whether or not to get coffee.  See if I wanted to get coffee, I’d need to stop at the bank. Hum. Ha. Hum. Ha.

So off to the bank I went.

After getting coffee, I hopped on the highway to go to work.  Not too bad, just 10 minutes behind schedule.  Traffic wasn’t too bad on the eastbound QEW though Oakville.  Drove past the Ford plant, listening to 680 News.

Great. 2 lanes were blocked with a collision past Winston Churchill.  Round the corner and stopped.  No worries, I’ll just inch my way along and I’ll be late.

I’m in the left-most lane; getting closer to Winston Churchill.  Radio says “all lanes are blocked”.

I start working my way over to the right.  One lane. Please nice expensive car, please let me in. Two lanes.  Oh good, SUV driver left a big gap.  Finally in the lane to the exit ramp.

I hear sirens. I see the flashing lights of 2 police cars flying up the left-most shoulder, closely followed by a big truck with an lighted arrow on the back.  Radio says “all lanes closed”.

Wow.  I was so relieved.  Not only was I smart enough to get over to get out of this mess, but I stopped to get coffee.  If I didn’t have to go to bank so that I could fuel my coffee addiction, I would have been past the Winston Churchill exit and have been stuck with the 1000s of other cars with nowhere to go.

What had happened was:

Ontario Provincial Police said the accident occurred around 6:50 a.m. when a Honda Accord slammed into a tractor-trailer that had stalled between the exit lane and the shoulder at Erin Mills Parkway.

An air ambulance landed on the highway just before 7:30 a.m. to transport the 39-year-old victim to hospital, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
(From the Toronto Star)

It is incidents like this that remind me how carefully I need to drive and how aware I need to be on my commute to and from work.

Please.  Everyone drive carefully.

dreading back to school

August 28, 2009 by Wendy S

Munchkin is heading in to Senior Kindergarten this year.  She’s very excited but I think it’s because we’ve been pumping her up over the last few weeks.  This is her first “back to school” so she’s not accustomed to the rituals that are involved: getting new shoes, new clothes and new school supplies.

That’s all fine and dandy.  But the back to school thing that I hate the most… more commuters on the road.

Next week will be the last 5 business day of good driving before all the vacationers come back.

Summer drives to work and back are pretty good as there are fewer people on the road.  September 8th will be a drastic change from doing the speed limit (if not more) to a crawl.  Oh, and just when everyone is back into the swing of things, the snow will come.  That screws up everything and the drive gets even longer.

So if you see a minivan pulled over on the side of the 401 with a crying woman in the driver’s seat, it will be me.  Not becuase my first born child is back in school and almost 5 year old, but becuase 2+ hours of my life is spent in said van surrounded by people who can’t do the speed limit.
