Laughter is the best medicine

October 27, 2014 by Wendy S

When my blog was named “funny things are everywhere”, a post called “funny things kids say” was appropriate.  I’m switching it up a bit, and now posts like these will be called “Laughter is the best medicine” because these conversations with the girls always make me laugh, which makes every all better!

Laughter is the best medicine @ mapsgirl.ca

One night, I’m going through the pile of clothes in the laundry basket, and folding and putting away as I go along.  But every once in a while, I come across something that needs to be hung up.

The girls are happily playing in Rachel’s room.

Me: Lauren!

Lauren: Yes, mommy!  (as she comes down the hallway for the 2nd time)

Me: Could you hang this up please?

Lauren: Yes. When are you going to call Rachel?

Me: When she starts wearing dresses.

Lauren heads back down the hallway.  I can just overhear her:

Lauren to Rachel: Start wearing dresses!

LOL!! She cracks me up!

Rachel: “Mom, what are we having for dinner?”

Me: “I don’t know yet. We have to go to the grocery store.”

Rachel: “They need to make a machine where you just push a button and your food is done.”

Me: “Ya, like The Jetsons!”

Rachel: “Who?”

Really?!?

funny things kids say: valentines day 2012

February 14, 2012 by Wendy S

Yesterday, after school, we finished getting their Valentine’s ready for their friends at a school. Munchkin had Brownies last night so Peanut came with me to drop her off.  When the two of us were driving home, I asked Peanut if she was excited about Valentine’s Day (this is her first V-Day at school).

Peanut: “Yes! I’m going to give Valentimes to all my friends!”  (we’re working on the pronunciation)

Then there was a pause.  “But I didn’t make one for me.”

Me: “What do you mean?”
Peanut: “I won’t have a valentine”

So I explained that if she was making Valentines for all of her friends, that her friends would be making them for her.

With the most excited little voice… “REALLY??? Wow!”

Last night the girls were getting their clothes laid out for the day.  They don’t usually do think the night before but they were super excited for Pink and Red day at school today.  I was in my room and I overheard this conversations:

Peanut:  “Thank you for all your help!”
Munchkin: “You’re welcome!”
Peanut: “You filled by bucket!!”

So sweet!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

funny things kids say: super bowl edition

February 6, 2012 by Wendy S

Last night the girls and I had our own mini-Super Bowl party.

BigDaddy was at an amazing Super Bowl party at Labatt HQ celebrating with the 2 hockey teams that were featured in the Budweiser Canada Super Bowl commercial.  Read BigDaddy’s post to hear all about the commercial — A Dream Come True For @Acurasherway — thanks to @BudCanada

The girls and I enjoyed our wings, milk (for them) and beer (for me) while watching the game.

I was explaining things to them like how downs work, how big the field is and what some of the positions are called.  Munchkin had a lot of questions!

But some of the comments and observations were too funny not to share with you!

After the game started, Munchkin asks, “Who are we cheering for?”
Peanut replies, “I’m cheering for Canada!”
Me: “Canada isn’t playing.  Both of the teams are American.”

Peanut: “But they look like Canada; they’re wearing red and white.”

She was looking at the Giant’s uniforms that were white with red numbers.  We did cheer for them and I was excited to see them win.  The girls didn’t see the end because they went to bed after the halftime show.

Peanut wasn’t all that into the game at first.  She declared, “That guy is mean!”  I asked her to explain.  “He just picked up that other guy and threw him on the ground!”  LOL!! I told her that there was a lot of contact and they guys would be hitting each other a lot; that’s why they’re wearing pads.

At one point during the game the girls were whispering and giggling.  I had to ask them what was so funny!.  Peanut tells me between giggles, “The big guys have to bend over and stick their bums out.”  That made me giggle too.  The perspective that they have is too funny!!

During the halftime show, the girls were excited to see all the costumes and dancers.  They’ve never seen Madonna before and I can’t say that I’ve ever played her music for them; at least not enough that they know who she is.

Munchkin and Peanut are dancing to the music and part way through Munchkin looks at me and says: “Mommy, how do you know all the words?”

The biggest, most exciting moment for them didn’t have anything to do with the game itself.  While BigDaddy was at the Super Bowl party, they filmed another commercial and he was in it!  Standing behind the General’s hockey team, you could see BigDaddy!  The girls went crazy!!  “Daddy’s on TV! Daddy’s on TV!!”

If we can find that commercial on YouTube, I’ll come back and post it here!

We haven’t found the video yet…but someone did share a photo with us!! BigDaddy is at the top right!

kids, twitter, digital footprints! oh my!

March 14, 2011 by Wendy S

Setting the scene:

A few weekends ago, my mom was at our house to baby sit the girls when we went out.  I had left my iPhone downstairs and went upstairs to get dressed and ready to go. My iPhone notification goes off saying that I have a mention on Twitter.
Fade to the living room:

Gramma [shouting up the stairs]: Your phone is ringing!
Munchkin: No, Gramma, it’s from Twitter.
Gramma: Oh, I don’t know how to twitter.
Munchkin: Tweet.
Gramma: I don’t know how to do that either.
LOL!
My 6 year is gonna be a Social Media guru.  Is @Munchkin taken?

Baby-sized Digital Footprints?

Recently CTV News talked about some of the digital things that parents are doing for their children.

Many children already have an online presence early on from parents posting images or videos of their little ones on social media pages or sharing them with loved ones via email and digital photo albums. Yet by registering customized accounts, domain names and profiles in their names for future use, some tech-conscious parents are giving their kids a digital jump-start.

An online survey for Internet security company AVG released last fall found 81 per cent of kids under the age of two currently have some kind of digital profile or footprint, with images of kids posted online. In Canada, that percentage surpassed the average, at 84 per cent. Canadian moms ranked first among respondents who uploaded prenatal scans online at 37 per cent.

The research conducted by Research Now polled 2,200 mothers in North America, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the U.K.

While the percentages of mothers who registered online accounts in their babies’ names were comparatively lower, Canadian moms polled topped the averages in those categories.

Nine per cent of Canadians gave their baby an email address, compared to seven per cent overall. Meanwhile, eight per cent of Canadian moms gave a social network profile to their tyke, compared to the overall average of five per cent.

I’ve thought about this; picking email addresses and twitter names for the girls.  But I think I’ll let the girls make their own marks on the world.  And I’m sure by the time BigDaddy and I allow them delve into the world of social media, there will be a whole new set of tools out there.

What about you?

Does your child have their own digital foot print already? What is your take on reserving a digital space for your child?

funny things kids say

April 2, 2010 by Wendy S

On my way home, BigDaddy called to see how the traffic was doing.*

With his neat hand free system, the phone works through the cars’ speakers and there is a microphone near his visor.

Munchin pipes up, “Mommy, Daddy thinks we’re going to a birthday party.”

Being silly, I say, “Are we?”

Munchkin: “Where are we going?”

Me: “I’m going with you.”

Munchkin: “Are we going to T’s birthday…TODAY?!?!”

Then Peanut shouts, “I’m going to K’s birthday party!!!!”

Then the best line of the night… “Daddy, you were right!  We ARE going to the birthday party tonight.”

BigDaddy laughs, “You better get used to saying that.”

I followed it up with, “I’m going to remind you about this when you’re 16.”

_________
* Traffic was horrible.  2 accidents WB on the 401. Gardiner moving way too slowly.  Blah.
