Hubby!!

Over the last little while, Hubby has started wading into the blogosphere and has been reading blogs.  He’s a good blog reader (maybe even better than me) because he’s commenting on posts that he reads (sometimes I get lazy…sorry).

I had suggested that he start his own blog where he can post stuff that he wants to share with others but the reaction was something a long the lines of “i don’t have time to do that”.  My next idea was that he post on my blog and we make this our blog.

My intentions for this blog was to share my life experiences, especially my kids, with anyone willing to read.  My life also includes my Hubby.

So welcome to the new and improved blog with posts written by my awesome husband.

(I’m not sure we can continue to call him “Hubby” tho.  Gonna have to think of a new handle for him. Maybe his first post could be an intoduction about himself and an announcement of what he wants to be called *hint, hint*)

hard consonants

November 8, 2008 by Wendy S

Peanut say so many things (and I do plan on posting a list of the 100s of words that she said) but today she finally said her sister’s name! Munchkin’s name is made up of “R”, “C” and “L” which can be tough to learn. Until today, she’s been calling her “Sister”, which is still really cute. It will be nice when she says her name too.

Today’s going to be a busy day. We’re still working on the master bathroom; today we’ll finish painting the cupboard and finish the floors and install the toilet.

Also we need to go to Canadian Tire to get wiper blades for the vehicles. A trip to Costco is in order (oh darn) because we need pork chops and chicken breasts. They’re bound to have their Christmas decorations out so that will be fun too.

Right now I’m just waiting for Hubby to get up. The girls and I are watching Arthur…while I drink coffee.

Is MSG the New Trans Fat?
Big Soup Brands Target MSG-Fearing Consumers

I don’t know if “fearing” is the right word describe our avoidance of MSG, but we do avoid it at all costs in our household.  Hubby gets migraines from MSG.

Marion Lestle said in the article, Is MSG the New Trans Fat?

“Lots of people tell me they are sensitive to it and that MSG gives them headaches or makes them dizzy. The research on MSG is so inconsistent that I can’t make head or tail of it.”

What is MSG?

From HeathDangers.com: “Monosodium Glutamate or MSG is a man-made flavor enhancer. It is now recognized by many in the medical profession as an excitotoxin – a type of drug which damages brain cells. It was first created in 1908 by Dr Kikunae Ikeda in Japan . The Japanese had been adding Kombu, a type of seaweed, to their foods as a flavor enhancer for over a thousand years. Dr Ikeda isolated the compound from Kombu which made the food taste better – it was glutamate. He founded the Ajinomoto Company to make and sell this new flavor enhancer – monosodium glutamate.”

Health Canada has an article on their website.  It discusses what it is and if it’s ‘safe’.  But there is a part of the article that should be in a larger, bold font:

“Claims pertaining to the absence or non-addition of monosodium glutamate such as “contains no MSG“, “no MSG added” and “no added MSG” are considered misleading and deceptive when other added sources of free glutamate are present (e.g., hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP), hydrolyzed soy protein (HSP), soya sauce or autolysed yeast extracts).”

There are many other names for MSG.  So just because the label reads “no MSG” or MSG isn’t listed in the ingredients, doesn’t mean it’s not there.

If these appear in the list of ingredients, there is MSG:

    • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
    • Hydrolyzed Protein:(plant, vegetable, any kind)

    • Sodium or Calcium Caseinate

    • Autolyzed Yeast, Yeast Extract

    • Yeast Food,  Yeast Nutrient

    • Textured Protein

    • Glutamic Acid

These OFTEN contain MSG or create MSG during processing:

    • NATURAL FLAVORS, flavoring, flavors,

    • Natural “anything” flavor.

    • Bouillon or Stock

    • Broth (chicken, beef, any kind)

    • Carrageenan

    • Whey protein, whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate.

    • Soy sauce, soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate.

    • Malt Extract or Flavoring, Malted Barley

    • Maltodextrin

    • anything Protein fortified

    Scary, isn’t it??

“More than meets the Tongue” is a great article.  I wanted to take some quotes from the article, but every time I read it, I just want to copy and paste the whole thing.  So please go over here and read it.  All of it.

As stated in the article, many fast food restaurants and companies use MSG in their foods.    I’m not going to give you a list….because it’s been done already so you can go read that here.

Here are a few other sites with some interesting info:

    http://www.truthinlabeling.org/
    http://www.msgmyth.com/
    http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/factsheets/FactMSG.htm

So there you go.  MSG is out there…you just have to look for it.

    6 more sleeps

    October 26, 2008 by Wendy S

Halloween is Friday!!    We enjoy Halloween a lot!

The house gets decorated!  Hubby dresses up to hand out candy!  Smoke machine, scary sounds!  The whole nin yards!

Well today we finally got Munchkin’s costume.  We tried last night but she didn’t like any of the princess costumes at Party Packagers.  She really wanted to be Snow White!  So we trucked off to Zellers and got the Snow White costume.  When we got home, she put it on to show Daddy and then didn’t want to take it off.  Guess holding out for this one was the right thing to do.

Peanut is giong as a pumpkin.  She looks so cute.

Oh, and you’ll have to wait for pics until Friday.  Mu-ha-ha-ha!

And the renos in the bathroom continued….this might get done…someday…..

    snow

    October 21, 2008 by Wendy S

    Yep. I said it. Snow.

Luckily we haven’t gotten any yet, but my dear friend Kia did!

Even though we haven’t gotten any snow, it’s be really cold. I was sure today that I was going to with the “Mother of the Year” award for sending Munchkin to school in just a raincoat. But Daddy is a smart man and got Munchkin to put on a warm fleece sweater, before wearing her raincoat. Thanks Daddy!

Munchkin’s winter coat still fits (for now) but Peanut has nothing. Peanut is too big for the 18-month size snowsuit and too small for the size 3 snow suit. Munchkin wore those at 12 months and 2 years old…yes, she’s a tall kid.

Off to Once Upon A Child we go. And they had the cutest pink, 2-piece snow suit! Peanut was great and let me try it on her. It’s perfect! I heart OUAC! Why pay full pop for something when you can get one that is barely worn.

I just have to work on mittens. I’m hoping Please Mum has the cool velcro ones again.

Today I fit in the “not so bad mom” category as I sent my kids off in their winter coats with no mittens or hats.

Oh, and Hubby says it’s not allowed to snow until the snow blower get delivered. Guess we’ll have to wait and see who wins that race.
