"teach them to tie in no time"

September 2, 2009 by Wendy S

That’s what is says on the package and they’re not lying.

Munchkin is tall for her age.  At 4 years 9 months old, she stands 45.5″ tall and weighs 45 lbs.  She wears size 6 clothes and size 13 shoes.  There in lies the trouble.  It is very difficult to find good, sturdy shoes with velcro in size 13.  There are lots of cutesy shoes with Velcro, but Munchkin has already proven that they aren’t good enough quality (she’s worn through 2 pairs already),

We started at the beginning of the summer to teach her how to tie her shoes . BigDaddy and I tie our shoes differently.  He does the “bunny ears” method: two loops and one crosses over and around the other.  I do the “One loop wrap” method: loop one lace, wrap the other around to make another loop.  Poor Munckin was struggling with both methods, neither was easy for her.

I started Googling to see if I could find some teaching techninics or tricks to help her learn.  But I found something even better.

Tie Buddies!!

Tie BuddiesTM will revolutionize when and how children learn to tie their shoes. With Velcro and slip-ons the average age of children learning to tie has increased with some children learning as late as 9 or 10.

Tie BuddiesTM offer children ages 3-9 the independence of tying their own shoes while quickly teaching them a method which is based around characters and stories depicted on the Tie BuddiesTM themselves. Tie BuddiesTM first offering includes one design each for boys and girls but rest assured more great characters are to come!

When we got them home, I put them on Munchkin’s Converse and she couldn’t wait to see how they work.  We went through each step slowly.

I guided her through the process a few times.  She was about to attempt tying for the 4th time when she said “I can do it myself, Mommy.  You just watch this time.”  And watch is exactly what I did.  I watched a huge smile and big sparkling eyes look up at me when she had done it all by herself.

Now we just need to get more tie buddies for both pairs of shoes she need for school!  She’s going to be so excited!

Thank you, Tie Buddies!!
