Lucky 7s Week 5 – Safe Kids Week and a The First Years True Fit Convertible Car Seat

May 16, 2011 by Wendy S

Thank you so much for joining in the festivities!
If this is your first visit to my site, please read this post to see what’s going on!!Week 5??  Wait! What happened to 3 and 4?
This contest will be running for 3 weeks (because it’s super important) and will close at the end of week 5.
Week 3 and 4’s contests are still coming… don’t you worry!

Safe Kids Week this year runs from May 30 – June 5, 2011 and the theme this year is Child Passenger Safety with a focus on the use of booster seats.

I’ve partnered with Safe Kids Canada and Young Drivers of Canada to help get this message out to drivers, parents and care givers who transport children in their cars.

Young Drivers main focus is “teaching Canadians how to drive and survive” but they truly appreciate the importance of passenger safety.  I was thrilled when they approached me to work with them for Child Passenger Safety week.

During Child Passenger Safety week, I will be sharing information with you about car seat safety, passenger safety, driving safety and even what to do when your little one becomes old enough to be a driver too.

We will end the week by giving a way a new The First Years True Fit car seat! *

As a car seat tech, the features that I like the most with this seat are:
  • has a rear-facing weight limit of 35lbs which allows for extended rear facing
  • has a 65lb limit when used forward facing with a 5pt harness
Both of these details I will be discussing in a lot more detail in my Child Passenger Safety week posts.

Here is a great introduction to the True Fit:

Thank you to everyone who entered! The contest is now closed.

 Be sure to check out
the other amazing prizes will be
given away in the weeks ahead!

Fine print: Due to Car Seat laws, this contest is open to Canadian’s only. It will close Sunday June 5, 2011 at 11:59pm EST.  The winner will be contacted by email and will need to respond within 24 hours to claim the prize.

* Disclosure: As a Car Seat Technician I cannot recommend one car seat over another.  This seat was chosen by Young Drivers as the seat to be given away to readers.
I am not being compensated in any way for this post.  The opinions are my own.

Lucky 7s Week 2 – Shut up and Eat and UnMarketing

May 14, 2011 by Wendy S

Thank you so much for joining in the festivities!  These next few weeks will be a lot of fun!

If this is your first visit to my site, please read this post to see what’s going on!!

Week 2
May 13-18

Kathy and Scott’s Books!

Donated by
bigdaddykreativ and me!!

Because of twitter, we have gotten to meet Kathy Buckworth and Scott Stratten  They are to very wonderful, knowledgeable people and they are fun to chat with on twitter.
BigDaddy and I have gone to a few events where we have been given copies of their books and this has led to us having multiple copies of Kathy’s and Scott’s books. We have enjoyed reading our copies, but it would be a shame for our extra copies to be left unread!

Be sure to follow  @kathybuckworth and @unmarketing on twitter — you’re sure to learn a lot and have a few good laughs!

From indigo.ca:
From The Publisher:

In Shut Up and Eat!, humourist and parenting author Kathy Buckworth applies her razor-sharp wit to an examination of the family meal.

Experts claim that sitting down to eat together can prevent children from getting into trouble while simultaneously creating close-knit families. In Buckworth’s opinion, that’s an awful lot to expect from a meatloaf! What about the son who thinks his food tastes better on the blue plate with the fish? Or the daughter who won’t eat anything green? And let’s not even talk about the mom who’d rather be doing anything but standing in front of the stove (drinking a glass of wine comes immediately to mind).

Laugh-out-loud funny, more accurate than most of us would care to admit-and with a few recipes thrown in for good measure-

Shut Up and Eat! is a must-read for any woman who’s ever wondered: What the hell am I cooking tonight?

From indigo.ca:From The Publisher:

From one of the leading experts in viral and social marketing-market your business effectively to today”s customers

For generations, marketing has been hypocritical. We”ve been taught to market to others in ways we hate being marketed to (cold-calling, flyers, ads, etc.). So why do we still keep trying the same stale marketing moves?

UnMarketing shows you how to unlearn the old ways and consistently attract and engage the right customers. You”ll stop just pushing out your message and praying that it sticks somewhere. Potential and current customers want to be listened to, validated, and have a platform to be heard-especially online. With UnMarketing, you”ll create such a relationship with your customers, and make yourself the logical choice for their needs.

Shows how to create a mindset and systems to roll out a new, 21st century marketing approach

Marketing expert Scott Stratten focuses on a Pull & Stay method (pulling your market towards you and staying/engaging with them, leading them to naturally choose you for their needs) rather than Push & Pray

Redefines marketing as all points of engagement between a company and its customers, not just a single boxed-in activity

Traditional marketing methods are leading to diminishing returns and disaffected customers. The answer? Stop marketing, start UnMarketing!

I love them so much, I’m sharing the with you!

If you would like to enter the contest,

you need to comment on this post telling me
if you’re on twitter and what you love about it!
Be sure to include your email address so we can contact you if you win.

Fine print:  The contest will close Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at midnight (EST). Winners will be contacted by email.

Disclosure: The books were given to us at various events and we just wanted other to be able to love them too.

The opinions on this blog are my own.

Lucky 7s Week 1 – Soap Nuts

May 5, 2011 by Wendy S

Thank you so much for joining in the festivities!  These next few weeks will be a lot of fun!

If this is your first visit to my site, please read this post to see what’s going on!!

Week 1
May 5-11
Soap Nuts
(250g bag)

Generously donated by

I have been using Soap Nuts for about a month now.  They are amazing little things!

Here is some info from Barley Sugar’s site:

What Are Soap Nuts?
Soap nuts aren’t technically nuts. They’re fruit, taken from the soapberry tree (Sapindus mukorrosi). In appearance, they’re similar to the lychee nut, yet they’re not grown for consumption. Thanks to their high concentration of foaming “saponin,” soap nuts are used throughout the world as cleaning agents.

Soap Nuts as an Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent
You may be wondering “how” soap nuts are used to clean laundry. Are they processed into powder or liquid? Can they be used as is? Can they be used more than once? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding “Yes.”

As research on soap nuts continues, new ways of using the berry will surely surface. However, as of now, soap nuts are most often used in their dried-fruit form. The fruit is harvested, de-seeded, and then dried in the sun, leaving behind the hardened shells — which can be soaked, crushed, and recycled.

And that is what I like best….they are environmentally friendly and renewable!

There are so many benefits:

  • reduction in water use
  • reduction in chemicals that my kids are coming into contact with
  • reduction in cost (so much cheaper than commercially-made detergents)
  • lessened environmental impact
  • and so many others

I love them so much, I’m sharing the with you!

Happy 7th Blogoversary to me…and a little something for you!

May 4, 2011 by Wendy S

I’m throwing Wordless Wednesday right out the window to day. I have way too much to say!!!

We’ve come a long way, baby!

This little blog sure has come a long, long way.
On May 4th, 2004, I announced our baby to the world.
And now my baby looks like this….and there are 2 of them!
This blog has grown from “we went for a walk today” to sharing my ups, my downs, my passions, with anyone who’s willing to listen.  And crazily enough, there are lots of amazing people who do read what I have to say!!
I have connected with so many people through my blog and now through twitter as well.  And last year I got brave enough to go to BlissDom Canada where I met some of the “big bloggers” who I started reading before I started blogging.  I probably shouldn’t have been surprised that they are just as amazing offline as they are online.
Most important to me, is that my online readers have become real people with relationships growing from writer/reader to friends.  This is truly amazing.

Gifts for you!

Usually at parties the birthday girl gets the gifts, but it’s my party so I’ll give if I want to.
To say thank you to all of you who continue to read this blog and connect with me on twitter or even IRL, I want to give you some gifts at my party.

For the next 7 weeks, I’ll have 7 giveaways…7 presents for you to say Thank You for sticking by me all these years.

I have created a tab up at the top for my Celebration.  You can see what the next 7 weeks has to offer.

Again, thank you for reading and for your friendship!
