mabel’s labels camp pack: not just for kids

With only a few days of school left, I know that there are many kids out there who are very excited to be heading off to camp.

BigDaddy and I loved being at camp a few weeks ago!  We didn’t go to camp to swim and play games, but we still had a lot of fun.  You can read all about the amazing camp that we were at for our Volunteer Builders weekend from my post “fixing up a camp for some very special kids”

Now I’ve been to camp many times. Acutally, it was every summer from the age of 6 until 16 and then I became a camp counsellor. So I know the types of things that campers need…clothes, flashlights, boots, rain gear… I could go on (or you could read Julie Cole’s “Mama of Many’s Guide to Camp“).  But packing for this camping trip was much different.  This time our list included tool belts, power tools, cameras and camera accessories; definately not what you’d consider “camping gear.”

This year at camp we had 185 people registered to do the build.  That was the largest number of participants ever.  As much as this was exicting, it was a bit worrisome as well.  How many people would be bringing the same yellow drill?

And then the light bulb went off.   Of course….

After partcipating in the the BlogHer 2010 contest, I was given the oportunity to review their Camp Pack.  Our build weekend would put them to the test.  See it had been raining all week, so the camp was wet and muddy and these tools would be everywhere.

I labeled the drills, batteries and charger.  Our jackets and sweatshirts also got labels.  If it was going to be leaving our tent trailer, it got a label.  With 15 Sticky Labels, 8 Shoe Labels, 2 Bag Tags, 50 Tag Mates™ (but you could get 40 Iron-Ons instead), we had everything read to go.

And the labels did their job!  The drills travelled all over camp working on many projects and were safely returned to us at the end of each day.  If the labels do this well under the wet, heavy-duty conditions, they will do great when my girls are off on their first summer camp.

And you can love them too!

Mabel’s Labels wants one of my my awesome readers to have their own custom Camp Pack.

To enter, you need to comment on this post and let me know about your favorite summer camp memories.  Make sure your inlcude your email address as Mabel’s Labels will be contacting the winner directly.

Good luck and happy summer!

The contest will be open until June 30th and the winner with be drawn July 1st using random.org.

The internet is gone!?! Forever? Now what?

The internet has been apart of my life since 1994 when I got my first email address which opened up a new world for me.

Ya, sure there’s a lot of sketchy things going on in the interwebs, but my internet is focused around communities of people who share similar interests. I entered into social networking, as it is called now, through a telnet chat room (talker) and now I’m leaving through my own little blog. And of course, I’ll tweet about this.

But when I step back, I see that my online life reflects my offline life; becoming completely enwrapt in a supportive community and finding ways to give back.

My children, and my husband, are my greatest passion so raising them (the kids, not my husband) to be an active part of the greater community is something that is important to me. Our girls see BigDaddy and I helping at church and at school. They see us going in to the community to make it a better place.

My love for my kids’ safety influenced me to become a child restraint technician. Now I’m working with the OPP and St. John’s Ambulance to keep all kids safe. (I’m sure some of my closest friends will tell you that this has become a bit of an obsession rather than a passion, but it’s a fine line and we don’t have to get into that now.)

So as we all get disconnected, I hope that everyone is able to find their sense of community in their offline worlds.

It just sucks that I’ll just have to find a new way to brag about my kids since I can’t blog any more.

This post was written as my entry to Mabel’s Labels BlogHer ’10 contest. We were asked to write a post on our blog in response to the following hypothetical situation:
Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever). You have one day left to write about your passions: what do you want to say to the blogosphere in 300 words or less?

They’re searching for a new blogger to write for them for one year
and attend the BlogHer ‘10 conference in NYC!
Thank you for your consideration!
