There has got to be a better way to end your life than going over the Falls.
The article on CTV’s website has some great pictures of the helicopter rescuing the 30-year old, suicidal man who jumped into the river and was swept over the Falls.
Growing up in Niagara Falls, I know how powerful the force of that water is. The geographer in me will tell you that the plunge pool at the bottom is deeper than the Falls is tall.
Usually when people go over the falls, they die by getting caught up in the circulation of the water beneath and it could take days or weeks for the bodies to surface. I know of stories from Park’s Police officers who had to pull bloated, water-logged bodies out of the water by the Maid of the Mist dock. Eeeewww. Guess that’s what you get for being one of the strongest guys.
The title of this blog is not to poke fun at the guy who’s having some trouble right now, but Trash-Vegas Niagara Falls has a history of daredevils who go over the Falls on purpose to try to survive the fall. In true trashy tourism style, they have a museum. The first person, Anne Taylor, to go over and survive, did it in a barrel.
But not everyone has survived. The fact that this guy went over trying to die (like many have before him) and lived, is miraculous. This guy was lucky enough not to get sucked in, even though that is what he wanted. God obviously had other plans for that guy. I hope that he is able to get the help that he needs.
I can’t say that my life has ever been bad enough to want it to end. And I hope I never do feel that way.
