skeletons in the closet

August 31, 2009 by Wendy S

Maybe not skeletons, but there is a whole bunch of stuff in there that either needs to be vacated or organized so that I know what it is.

Since we’ve moved in our house, we’ve renovated almost every other room in the house: family room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, our bedroom and both girls’ rooms.  Each of those rooms need the wallpaper removed, fresh paint and new blinds.

During each project furniture and other things get moved from place to place.  The things that didn’t get moved back some how or another, got piled up in our walk-in closest in our master bedroom.   It’s a mess.

We’re just putting the finishing touches in the ensuite…towel bars and toilet paper holder.  You know, the important things.   (There will be before and after pics of our bathroom coming…it’s a remarkable change)

The next task is our closet.

First step will be taking all the stuff out and figuring out if it goes in the toss, keep or sell pile.  There will be one rule to follow — if we haven’t touched in 2 years, it’s outta here!  I’m thinking that a lot of stuff will be in the toss or sell pile.

Why is getting rid of stuff so hard?  And why has it taken us so long to put ourselves first?

um…you forgot your barrel

March 13, 2009 by Wendy S

There has got to be a better way to end your life than going over the Falls.

The article on CTV’s website has some great pictures of the helicopter rescuing the 30-year old, suicidal man who jumped into the river and was swept over the Falls.

Growing up in Niagara Falls, I know how powerful the force of that water is.  The geographer in me will tell you that the plunge pool at the bottom is deeper than the Falls is tall.

Usually when people go over the falls, they die by getting caught up in the circulation of the water beneath and it could take days or weeks for the bodies to surface.  I know of stories from Park’s Police officers who had to pull bloated, water-logged bodies out of the water by the Maid of the Mist dock.  Eeeewww.  Guess that’s what you get for being one of the strongest guys.

The title of this blog is not to poke fun at the guy who’s having some trouble right now, but Trash-Vegas Niagara Falls has a history of daredevils who go over the Falls on purpose to try to survive the fall.  In true trashy tourism style, they have a museum.  The first person, Anne Taylor, to go over and survive, did it in a barrel.

But not everyone has survived.  The fact that this guy went over trying to die (like many have before him) and lived, is miraculous.  This guy was lucky enough not to get sucked in, even though that is what he wanted.  God obviously had other plans for that guy.  I hope that he is able to get the help that he needs.

I can’t say that my life has ever been bad enough to want it to end.  And I hope I never do feel that way.

T Minus 17 days

March 3, 2009 by Wendy S

There is less than 3 weeks until the official start of spring (March 20th).  Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t tend to follow the Gregorian calendar like we do.

As I look out my 4th floor office window, I see blue sky brightened by the sun.  There isn’t a cloud in the sky.

As I begin to lower my eyes, I see the tops of the trees…still leafless and brown.  Further down I see small piles of white snow and the roads are dusted with grey, dirty road salt/sand remains.  And I know that if I was to look at a thermometer it would read minus-something-horrible degrees Celsius.

I guess you can say “things are looking up”!  Well, I know that I will keep looking up to the blue sky.  I need spring to come.  I need warm weather.  I need walks outside with the girls without having to put on 18 layers of clothes, snow pants, hats, mitts, boots.  I need trips to the park not trips to the tobogganing hill.  I need drives in the car with my windows open not the heater on full blast.

So many things to look forward too.  If it could only come a bit sooner.

i’d like to buy a "LY", please

December 9, 2008 by Wendy S

Is proper grammar really that hard?  Or are people just lazy?

Person 1: “Oh, I went to the movies!  Madagascar 2 was great!”
Person 2: “I seen that one too”.

No… You SAW that one too.

This site shows how to use saw and seen.

Person 1: “Wow, did you see that car zip by me?”
Person 2: “Ya, they were going quick.”

No….they were going QUICKLY!

It’s called an adverb…it describes a verb.  Quickly is describing how the car was going.

I haven’t quite figured out if schools have stopped teaching proper grammar or whether people just don’t use it.  If my 4 year old can get it right, why can’t adults?
